In May of 1998, I was privileged to see Chet Atkins play at the Tennessee Theatre. As it turned out, it was to be his last concert. I don’t remember much of what he played. But, I do remember that he played Don McLean’s “Vincent.” I remember getting chills when I heard the first notes, not knowing that he had made an arrangement of the song. I learned to play the song shortly thereafter. I still love playing it in the quiet of late evening, listening intently as the haunting beauty of the chords and melody embrace the loneliness that settles in with the dark of night.
Nobody plays it like Chet did, though.
